Navigating the Tides of Change in Sustainability

Sustainability is the undercurrent that drives Trinseo’s company strategy, influencing what we do each day. It pushes us to develop innovative materials and solutions that address today’s challenges and unlock new opportunities for tomorrow’s innovations. The release of our 15th annual Sustainability & Corporate Social Responsibility Report demonstrates how we are successfully navigating the tides of change in our industry and charting a course for success in the years ahead.

Our vision is clear: we are transforming into a specialty and sustainable materials solutions company, and our recent report details this exciting journey. Below, I explore how our collaborative approach to innovation, significant progress toward our sustainability goals, and expansion of advanced recycling technologies are shaping this path forward.

Synergy for Sustainable Innovation

Cross-team collaboration is essential to our sustainability progress, and that is why the integration of Trinseo’s Sustainability Business & Services (SBS) and R&D teams was a critical development last year. By bringing these teams together under one leader, we’ve created synergies that fuel both innovation and sustainability.

This alignment allows us to work smarter and more effectively to advance our sustainably advantaged product portfolio. It’s not just about having a strategy in place—it’s about streamlining solutions that utilize recycled or bio-based content and meet performance demands, while also supporting our emissions reduction initiatives. By having R&D and SBS working side by side, we are better positioned to achieve these targets, as well as meet our sustainability goals.

Achieving Our Sustainability Goals

Our 2030 Sustainability Goals are more than just a dot on the horizon; they are a map that guides our strategy. These aspirational but achievable goals are focused on reducing our carbon footprint, working with suppliers who share our values, aligning our products with changing regulations, and creating an environment that supports the professional growth of our team. Each year, we progress toward our goals, and in 2024 we celebrated significant achievements.

A key milestone was the establishment of our Scope 3 Inventory, which received limited assurance from an independent third-party assurance provider. This crucial data equips us to better analyze and manage these emissions, setting the foundation for future reduction initiatives in partnership with our suppliers and value chain.

Beyond this, we continued to advance energy efficiency by reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions across our global sites. By implementing site-level renewable energy projects, like our solar installation in Hamina, Finland, we were able to exceed our goal of electricity from non-fossil sources.*

We also made significant strides in water management, conducting our first Water Risk Assessment (WRA). This initial assessment provides crucial insights that will guide our strategies to improve water efficiency and address challenges like scarcity and pollution across our global operations.

Expanding Recycling Technologies

One of the most exciting areas where we are charting a new course at Trinseo is in recycling technologies. We took major steps forward in 2024, particularly with the launch of two cutting-edge recycling technologies: our polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) depolymerization demonstration facility in Rho, Italy, and an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) dissolution pilot facility in Terneuzen, the Netherlands. These technologies enable us to recycle a broader range of plastic waste. As recycled content-containing solutions continue to grow in demand due to forthcoming regulations like the European Clean Industrial Deal, we will be better positioned to provide recycled feedstocks to our businesses and enhance service to our customers.

Our Sustainability Report reflects the hard work and dedication of Trinseo’s employees each day as we advance toward our sustainability goals. Trinseo is well-positioned in our transformation, with a clear vision and an unwavering commitment to sustainability. We are ready to push the boundaries on innovation, anchored in our sustainability goals and supported by our adaptive strategy.
